Celebrate the start of 2027 in Amsterdam. On 31 December the city hosts a free countdown show on Museumplein, light festival cruises and ice skating until 21:00, dozens of New Year’s Eve parties and plenty of attractions that stay open. Below you’ll find everything you need to plan your night. We update this page as soon as new details are announced.

New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam at a glance
- Date: Thursday 31 December 2026 into Friday 1 January 2027.
- Big countdown: Electric Fireworks on Museumplein, free entry. The countdown to 2027 starts at 23:55.
- Fireworks: consumer fireworks are banned in the whole of the Netherlands from this year. Enjoy the light show instead.
- Parties: most New Year’s Eve parties sell out. Book your tickets in advance.
- Public transport: stops around 20:00 on 31 December and restarts with night services from about 01:30.
- Hotels: fill up early. Book your stay as soon as possible.

Electric Fireworks on Museumplein
The biggest New Year’s Eve celebration in Amsterdam takes place on Museumplein. The City of Amsterdam organises Electric Fireworks, a show of light, lasers and live music with a giant countdown clock. Entry is free, but space is limited, so arrive early.
There are two shows. In the early evening there is a short show for children and families. Late in the evening the main show starts, building up to the countdown at 23:55 and the first minutes of 2027. The countdown is broadcast live on RTL.

Fireworks in Amsterdam
From 2026, setting off consumer fireworks is banned in the whole of the Netherlands, including Amsterdam. Buying or lighting fireworks yourself is not allowed and you can be fined. The light show on Museumplein is the place to see something spectacular at midnight.
What’s open on 31 December and 1 January?
Most museums and attractions in Amsterdam are open on New Year’s Eve, often with shorter hours. Many close early on 31 December and open later on 1 January. Book a time slot in advance where possible. Hours below were last checked on 2 October 2026; “to be confirmed” means the venue has not published its holiday hours yet.

Public transport on New Year’s Eve
On 31 December, trams, buses, metros and trains in Amsterdam stop at around 20:00. Amsterdam Centraal closes in the evening. From about 01:30 on 1 January, night buses and some metro lines run again; NS night trains run between Amsterdam, Schiphol, Utrecht, Leiden, The Hague and Rotterdam. Plan to walk or stay close to where you celebrate.
Hotels for New Year’s Eve
Central hotels in Amsterdam are often fully booked weeks before New Year’s Eve, so book early. A hotel within walking distance saves you from the late-night transport gap.
