Amsterdam Light Festival will be held from 1 December 2022 to 22 January 2023. Be amazed during Amsterdam Light Festival! This edition we dive into the magical nature of light with the theme ‘In Search of the Miraculous‘.
Amsterdam Light Festival
Experience the open-air light exhibition ‘Jubilee edition’ along a completely new waterroute and visit one of the many activities during the tenth edition of Light Festival in Amsterdam! From December 2, 2021 to January 23, 2022, Amsterdam will once again be the stage for international light art for 53 days.
Information on the illuminated works of art
This tenth edition of the Light Festival has more than 20 works of light art along the route. Each work of light art tells its own story, but there are also inspiring stories and themes, which you can hear via the audio tour on board of one of the special Light Festival Canal Cruises. The audio tour is available in Dutch and English.
Light Festival Walk
You can also enjoy the works of light art from the quay. A special 6.5-kilometre walking route has been developed that takes you past the works of art. You can choose between the walking tour including or excluding an audio guide (in English or Dutch) The route map and audio guide are on sale at the Light Festival Amsterdam ticket shop.
Light Festival Cruises
Bring your festival experience to a higher level and experience the festival from the water with a guide or audio tour. Join a cruise on the canals of Amsterdam with cosy and luxury boats. Each of the boats equipped with pillows, blankets, a bathroom and other luxuries making it a very stylish and extraordinary house on the water.
During the 90 minutes long cruise, guided by a friendly skipper you not only will enjoy amazing art pieces passing by but also will be able to have a drink.
The different types of canal boats during Light Festival Amsterdam
There are various types of canal boats to choose from. Below is an overview:
Closed + heated canal boats

Enjoy a comfortable cruise past the illuminated artworks of the Light Festival Amsterdam in one of the closed canal boats. The many windows give you a good view of the light artworks and Amsterdam. These tours depart from Amsterdam Central Station and Leidseplein.
Open top canal boats

These comfortable canal boats have a roof but are open on the sides. This gives you an even better view of the works of light. It may, however, be colder than in the closed canal boats. There are blankets in the boat for extra warmth if necessary. These tours depart from Amsterdam Central Station.
Opening hours Light Festival Cruises
The Light Festival’s light artworks are on every day from 17:00 to 23:00. On New Year’s Eve, the light artworks will be switched off at 20.00 hours. The canal boats start between 16:30 and 21:30.

Prices and Departure locations Light Festival cruise
There are several departure locations for the Amsterdam Light Festival canal cruises. You reserve a ticket for a specific departure location.

The canal boats depart from a stop near Central Station or Leidseplein and are easily accessible by train, metro, tram and bus. You can easily plan your trip by public transport via 9292. Parking is available near Central Station at the Central Station car park.
