The ice sculpture festival Art Below Zero is a new event during the Winter Festival Amsterdam, held in the iconic Central Markthal. Taking place from 21 December 2024 to 2 March 2025, this unique ice festival brings Amsterdam’s history to life through breathtaking ice sculptures inspired by 750 years of city stories. Visitors can enjoy impressive works of art and interactive experiences, making it an essential winter experience for young and old alike.

When is the ice sculpture festival Art Below Zero in Amsterdam?

This Winter Festival season, there will be a unique new ice event in Amsterdam. From 21 December 2024 to 2 March 2025, Europe’s largest ice sculpture festival Art Below Zero will be on display at the Central Market Hall in the centre of Amsterdam.

At Art Below Zero, you’ll step into a captivating world of ice, art, and interactive experiences. The central theme of this exhibition is Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, brought to life through stunning life-size ice sculptures. Created by skilled artists from across the globe, these frozen masterpieces showcase key historical moments from the city’s rich history. As Europe’s largest ice exhibition, Art Below Zero offers visitors a one-of-a-kind journey through time, blending art and history in a mesmerizing and immersive way.

Interactive program & ice sculpture workshops

After enjoying the main exhibition, you can dive into our interactive program, where you’ll explore the art of ice sculpting firsthand. Join a workshop, go on a scavenger hunt, and learn about the fascinating science behind this robust material.

At the restaurant, you’ll find a variety of coffee, tea, soft drinks, pastries, and an extensive lunch menu or snacks. The dishes are made using as many local ingredients as possible. For smaller bites, you can also visit the various cafés and restaurants located on the square.

Art Below Zero will be open every day from 21 December 2024 to 2 March 2025 from 10am to 6pm. Last entry is at 5pm.

How do you travel to the ice sculpture festival?

The ice sculpturefestvial will be held at the Central Market Hall in the centre of Amsterdam.

Public transport

You can reach Art Below Zero by taking tram 3 towards Flevoland or Van Hallstraat (get off at the Hugo de Grootplein stop). From this stop, it is a 5-minute walk to the main entrance of the Central Market Hall.

From Amsterdam Central Station

From Amsterdam Central Station, you can take bus 18 towards Louweshoek and get off at the Markthallen after 9 stops.

From A10 ring road

From Ring A10: take exit S105 and head towards Centrum via Jan van Galenstraat. Parking tickets are available here: [Link]

From Schiphol Airport

From Schiphol: take the A4 towards Amsterdam (Ring A10) and take exit S105. Drive via Jan van Galenstraat towards the city centre.

You can park your car in the Tetterode garage (Willem de Zwijgerlaan 334-338, 1055 RD Amsterdam). Parking spaces can be limited.

Coming by bike? Then park your bike in front of the Food Centre’s main entrance on the right side of the walkway in the bike racks.
